چکیده

This paper describes a study of the levels at which different rhetorical relations occur in rhetorical structure trees. In a previous empirical study (Williams and Reiter, 2003) of the RST-DT (Rhetorical Structure Theory Discourse Treebank) Corpus (Carlson et al., 2003), we noticed that certain rhetorical relations tended to occur more frequently at higher levels in a rhetorical structure tree, whereas others seemed to occur more often at lower levels. The present study takes a closer look at the data, partly to test this observation, and partly to investigate related issues such as the relative complexity of satellite and nucleus for each type of relation. One practical application of this investigation would be to guide discourse planning in Natural Language Generation (NLG), so that it reflects more accurately the structures found in documents written by human authors. We present our preliminary findings and discuss their relevance for discourse

Rhetorical structure and argumentation structure in monologue text

On the basis of a new corpus of short “microtexts” with parallel manual annotations, we study the mapping from discourse structure (in terms of Rhetorical Structure Theory, RST) to argumentation structure. We first perform a qualitative analysis and discuss our findings on correspondence patterns. Then we report on experiments with deriving argumentation structure from the (gold) RST trees, whe...

Rhetorical Structure Analysis of EFLs’ Written Narratives of a Picture Story

This study was set to reveal how second language learners use rhetorical relations in their written narratives in terms of Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST) primarily proposed by Mann & Thompson (1987) and developed by Mann, Matthiessen & Thompson (1992). To this end, sixty written narratives based on the picture story book ‘Frog, where are you?’ were collected from EFL learners and were put to...

Comparing rhetorical structures in different languages: The influence of translation strategies

The study we report in this article addresses the results of comparing the rhetorical trees from two different languages carried out by two annotators starting from the Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST). Furthermore, we investigate the methodology for a suitable evaluation, both quantitative and qualitative, of these trees. Our corpus contains abstracts of medical research articles written both...

Dependency-based Discourse Parser for Single-Document Summarization

The current state-of-the-art singledocument summarization method generates a summary by solving a Tree Knapsack Problem (TKP), which is the problem of finding the optimal rooted subtree of the dependency-based discourse tree (DEP-DT) of a document. We can obtain a gold DEP-DT by transforming a gold Rhetorical Structure Theory-based discourse tree (RST-DT). However, there is still a large differ...

Ontological representations of rhetorical figures for argument mining

This paper surveys ontological modeling of rhetorical concepts, developed for use in argument mining and other applications of computational rhetoric, projecting their future directions. We include ontological models of argument schemes applying Rhetorical Structure Theory (RST); the RhetFig proposal for modeling; the related RetFig Ontology of Rhetorical Figures for Serbian (developed by two o...
